现代英语俚语

时间: 2006年04月05日 13:38    作者:英语俚语    来源:新东方专稿
all ears 竖起耳朵,全神贯注地听

May: But the thing is that he has everyone of the company eating out of his hand(把每个人搞得服服帖帖的). When I called on him(去看他) last week, the happened to have a meeting. He was giving them a pep talk(鼓舞士气的讲话) and they were all ears at him. Everyone seemed to lend a willing ear to(洗耳恭听) what he was saying.

May: He's really something(真有他的). He must have got the hang of(找到窍门) dealing with people.

May: Yes, he has. He's able to keep everyone on his toes(使每一个人忙个不停).

Jim: I must go and have a talk with him. I need to pick his brains(请教).

May: Let me give him a buzz(挂个电话) and see if he'd like to see you.

注意:当它的后面跟随宾语时,在all ears的后面常用介词at连接宾语。例如:The kids were all ears at the old man. 孩子们全神贯注地听老人给他们讲话。

All the way 自始至终地

May: Of course you can't stay idle, but you must find something that you are good at. You can’t do things you are all thumbs(笨手笨脚的) at.

Jim: I know. But how can I know what I am good at before I actually try?

May: That can be costly. And once you have started on something, you will have to bone up(甩开膀子干) on it and move all the day up without hesitation.

Jim: Well, I've come all the way to seek advice from you. I depend on you for directions.

May: Depend on me? You must be pulling my leg(别拿我开心了)! I'm no good at doing business.

Jim: But your friend is. You can pull the strings(暗地里使劲) and let him advice me.

May: Well, he's too busy to talk to you right now.
